HANOI: Vietnam is actively reaching out to US technology and industry giants like Lockheed Martin, SpaceX, and Google in a bid to reduce the substantial 46% tariffs imposed during President Donald Trump’s administration. This strategic engagement comes as Vietnam navigates a complex trade landscape, aiming to rectify its significant trade surplus with the United States, which ranks third behind China and Mexico.

With concerns mounting about the long-term implications of these tariffs, Vietnam is eager to establish more balanced trade relations. Recent discussions between Hanoi and Washington have set the stage for constructive dialogue, with Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Hong Dien, meeting with key executives from several US firms. These conversations are centered around the importance of collaboration, which Dien emphasizes could deliver sustainable benefits while improving the trade balance.

“We need to be prioritized as a trade partner,” stated Minister Dien, highlighting the urgent necessity for Vietnam to be recognized in this vital economic relationship. The ministry’s statement also conveyed the importance of support from American corporations in persuading the Trump administration to reconsider tariff impositions.

During these meetings, Excelerate Energy, a liquefied natural gas company, proposed initiatives to position Vietnam as a hub for LNG distribution within the ASEAN region. Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin has committed to work alongside Hanoi to further develop capabilities in aviation, space, and defense technologies.

Additionally, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is stepping up its investment in Vietnam, planning to establish up to 15 ground stations through a US$1.5 billion investment. This ambitious project aims to provide broadband internet connectivity across various parts of the country, particularly benefiting remote and isolated areas, including border and island communities.

The Vietnamese ministry has underscored that Vietnam is a strategic market in the global expansion plan of SpaceX’s Starlink service, which could significantly enhance connectivity and technological access throughout the region.

In another noteworthy development, the state-owned Vietnam National Industry and Energy Group (PetroVietnam) recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Westinghouse Electric regarding nuclear power development. This agreement focuses on investment models in energy infrastructure, technology transfer, and training for human resources, indicating Vietnam’s commitment to diversified energy sources.

Vietnam’s strategy in energy development is not just a standalone goal; it is viewed as a crucial element in balancing the trade relationship with the United States, further emphasizing the interconnectedness of energy cooperation and trade dynamics.
