On May 15, 1985, Christine was last seen walking towards a freeway around 10:30 p.m. After she failed to return home, the following morning, a passerby discovered her lifeless body in a secluded area of Jefferson Street. Christine had been brutally assaulted, beaten, stabbed, and shot—an act so violent that it left a stain not just on the ground, but on the hearts of those who loved her. For years, investigators combed through evidence and testimonies, but leads were scarce, and the case soon went cold.
Renewed Hope
Fast forward to May 15, 2023—on the 40th anniversary of her tragic disappearance, the Salt Lake City Police Department announced they had identified a suspect in Christine’s murder. This revelation was made possible through advancements in DNA technology and genealogy research, methods that were not available at the time of her death.
The Suspect: Ricky Lee Stallworth
The newfound investigative efforts led to Ricky Lee Stallworth, a 27-year-old airman stationed at Hill Air Force Base at the time of Christine’s murder. With assistance from Othram, a Texas-based DNA lab, a voluntary DNA sample from one of Stallworth’s sons matched forensic evidence collected during the initial investigation. Even though Stallworth had passed away from natural causes in early 2023, this advancement breathed new life into a cold case.
Detective Cordon Parks commented on the significance of this discovery, noting, “Unfortunately, in this case, we don’t have a suspect to put handcuffs on, or anyone to charge. But we hope our efforts achieved some measure of justice for her and her family.”
A Mother’s Pain
Leah Gallegos, Christine’s mother, expressed her gratitude towards the police for their unwavering commitment to solving her daughter’s murder. She poignantly shared, “You never quit thinking about it, you never quit crying about it. In the years that followed Christine’s murder, multiple interviews were conducted, but none yielded fruitful leads until the recent advancements in forensic investigative genealogy. The Cold Case Review Board suggested reviewing DNA samples from a genealogical perspective, which led investigators to Stallworth as a potential suspect. His name hadn’t emerged during the original investigation, nor was there any known connection between Stallworth and Gallegos.

Stallworth’s life after the murder was also marked by controversy; he was later identified as the “State Street Stalker,” with allegations surfacing about his interactions with sex workers in the local area.
