World News Live Updates: In a weekly update, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported an additional 66 measles cases, bringing the national total to 1,001 this year.
World Health News Live Updates: The year 2025 has witnessed a troubling resurgence of one of the most contagious viral infections: measles. Health authorities across Canada and the United States have confirmed that each country has now crossed 1,000 reported cases, marking the deadliest measles outbreak in over three decades.
As of May 8, 2025, 31 jurisdictions, led by the state of Texas, reported 1,001 confirmed measles cases. This alarming statistic puts the United States on track to exceed the 1,279 cases reported in 2019, a surge attributed to an unvaccinated religious group that sparked outbreaks in various cities, including New York.
In light of this health emergency, the CDC reissued a Travel Health Advisory in March 2025, alerting international travellers of the potential risk. The advisory identifies 57 countries currently reporting measles cases, emphasizing that all international travellers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. This includes an early dose for infants to ensure they are protected before travel.
Despite the high numbers in the U.S. and Canada, as of May 11, 2025, the CDC has not included Texas, Ontario, or Mexico (which has reported over 700 cases) in its official measles advisory. This raises questions about the ongoing management and monitoring of the outbreak, as health authorities work to control the spread and prevent further cases.
