Man Walking Across the U.S. Advocates for Mental Health During CT Stop

Ohioan Joe Hall: Walking Across America for Mental Health Awareness

Ohio resident Joe Hall is embarking on a remarkable journey, walking across America to advocate for mental health awareness and suicide prevention. This is not his first time traversing the country for this cause; at 42 years old, Hall has set out once again under the banner of his nonprofit organization, Hall Across the Country.

Breaking the Stigma

“Obviously, we know it’s very stigmatized,” Hall points out, highlighting the challenges many face when discussing mental health. He understands firsthand the obstacles to opening up about personal struggles. Hall’s mission is to foster an environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing their feelings and experiences.

The Journey

Each day, Hall commits to walking at least 15 miles, pushing a cart filled with his supplies. His journey is a blend of adventure and simplicity—camping out under the stars where permitted and finding a cozy hotel or hostel if needed. This lifestyle brings him closer to the communities he visits and the people eager to share their own stories.

As he interacts with those he meets along the way, Hall openly shares his own struggles with mental health. “I’m very open about sharing my story because I can’t ask people to open up about what’s going on with them if I’m not willing to do the same,” he explains.

Overcoming Personal Struggles

Hall’s own challenges are deeply rooted in his past, having survived two suicide attempts. He emphasizes that he is still navigating his journey of self-improvement and healing. “It’s that thought, the idea that I want to keep people from getting to that point,” he states. His desire to prevent others from experiencing similar heartache drives him forward.

Through his walk, Hall connects with individuals on a personal level, sharing the impactful moments and milestones of his life that he wouldn’t have experienced had he not chosen to keep fighting.

A Long Road Ahead

His ambitious goal encompasses walking through 48 states and their capital cities to spread awareness. Although he began this journey in May last year, Hall’s path has not been without interruptions. He had to take a break after the passing of his father, and later faced emergency surgery, which set back his progress.

Since resuming his mission in April, he estimates that it will take him at least another two-and-a-half years to reach his goal. Yet even amidst personal challenges, he draws strength from the thought that he might be able to help someone else in the process. “For a long time, I didn’t feel like I had any reason to be alive, and I don’t want anybody else to ever feel like that,” he reflects earnestly.

Community Support and Donations

Hall’s journey is funded through the generous contributions of donors, and he welcomes in-kind donations as well. You can support him and his mission by visiting www.hallacrossthecountry.com.

By sharing his story and walking across America, Joe Hall is not just advocating for mental health awareness; he is creating a ripple effect of hope and inspiration, reminding us all that we are never truly alone on our journeys.
