Alongside 18 other inmates, he volunteered for what was presented as a study on schizophrenia, with promises of reduced sentences in return for their participation. He feared that if he disclosed the full extent of the experiments or admitted to hearing voices—delusions often exacerbated by the drug—he might find himself institutionalized indefinitely. Despite his painful experiences, Bulger’s life took a more infamous turn after his release. He went on to become a notorious figure in organized crime, later turning informant for the FBI. However, his criminal endeavors eventually led him to spend an astounding 16 years on the run until his capture at the age of 81 in 2011. He was then charged with multiple counts of murder among other serious offenses.

Interestingly, as MK-ULTRA progressed, Gottlieb concluded that achieving effective mind-control was ultimately unfeasible. This realization led him to pivot the program’s focus toward the development of poisons and gadgets that CIA operatives could utilize in their covert operations.
