Bob Baffert’s Rocky Road: A Comeback in the Horse Racing World
As the dust settled after the Kentucky Derby, legendary trainer Bob Baffert shared his optimism about the 2025 racing season, stating, “I really feel like this year I have two horses that could be in the top five, top 10.” His excitement was palpable, especially after the end of his controversial three-year suspension. Yet, fate had other plans. The much-anticipated debut of his two horses, Rodriguez and Citizen Bull, faced a setback.
Just days before the Derby, Rodriguez sustained a bruise, forcing Baffert to reassess his chances. Citizen Bull did take to the track but finished a disappointing 15th, far from the lofty expectations set by his seasoned trainer. The Preakness Stakes offered little reprieve; Goal Oriented’s collision with the eventual winner Journalism left Baffert reflecting on his horse’s behavior. “I knew he was intimidated,” he admitted, illustrating the myriad challenges faced by a trainer in the high-stakes world of thoroughbred racing.
Despite these hurdles, Baffert’s determination remains unwavering. Looking forward to the G1 Woody Stephens Stakes, he is set to bring both Citizen Bull and Madaket Road—two Kentucky-bred colts whose combined price tag reaches an impressive $1.325 million. This is particularly significant, as Baffert captured this same race last year with Arabian Lion, aiming to regain some of his former glory.

Tom Ryan, the managing partner of Team Baffert’s SF Racing, confirmed Citizen Bull’s readiness on social media, stating, “Citizen Bull was in complete control again this morning. Smooth all the way, wanting more.” His confidence in the horse’s performance was set against a backdrop of high expectations, bolstered by Hall of Fame jockeys Mike Smith and John Velazquez taking the reins. Baffert has strategically opted for one horse to run blinkers-free, enhancing manageability while adjusting training tactics following Citizen Bull’s lackluster Derby performance.
While focus shifts to the Woody Stephens, there’s speculation about Rodriguez making a strong return in the Belmont Stakes. After incurring an injury that prevented him from running in the Derby, the colt has been training vigorously at Santa Anita. Recently, Baffert observed Rodriguez clock five furlongs in 1:00.40, a promising indication of the colt’s competitive edge. “I knew I was in trouble,” the trainer recounted of Rodriguez’s injury. Thankfully, with sufficient recovery time, he feels optimistic about the horse’s current condition.

Baffert’s excitement about the upcoming races is palpable, yet he acknowledges the competition he faces. The Belmont Stakes presents an opportunity for Rodriguez to finally showcase his skills, but he will need to contend with formidable opponents like Kentucky Derby champion Sovereignty and Preakness victor Journalism. The stage is set for a return that could redefine Baffert’s reputation in the racing community.
