From Basement to Big Stage: Brothers Brenden and Paxten Aaronson Join U.S. Gold Cup Roster

From the Basement to the Big Leagues: The Aaronson Brothers’ Soccer Journey

Early Beginnings in "The Dungeon"

Brenden and Paxten Aaronson’s soccer journey began in an unlikely venue—a New Jersey basement affectionately dubbed "The Dungeon." This improvised training ground is where they honed their skills, practicing penalties and free kicks while navigating obstacles like light bulbs that were at risk of being broken by errant shots. Their mother, Janell Aaronson, recalled the lengths taken to make it a safe environment, including installing special lighting and padding around poles.

A Mother’s Pride

On June 10, Janell experienced a moment of immense pride at GEODIS Park in Nashville, Tennessee. There, she watched her sons make history by becoming only the fourth set of brothers to start a match together for the U.S. national team—an achievement not accomplished since 1979. This milestone is a testament not only to their dedication but also to their family’s unwavering support.

Competing Together and Apart

The Aaronson brothers have long had a competitive spirit—a trait formed in their early backyard battles. Brenden, now 24, reflects on their childhood: “I played with this guy since, I don’t know, 5—he was probably actually 2 at that time.” Meanwhile, Paxten, soon to be 22, is motivated by his brother’s achievements as he aspires to make his own mark in next year’s World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host.

Differing Styles, Unified Goals

According to U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino, Brenden and Paxten are “completely different players," each bringing unique talents to the field. Both have thrived in their respective positions as midfielders and wingers, carving out paths that started in the Philadelphia Union academy before transitioning to European leagues.

Life in Soccer: Family Culture

With Rusty Aaronson, a college soccer player himself, as their father, it’s no surprise the brothers have a profound understanding of the sport. Their youth involved countless hours spent playing competitive matches in the basement, a makeshift arena with taped goals and soft carpet—where toes were trodden and tempers flared. “We broke a lot of lights,” Paxten quipped, recalling their competitive nature.

Sibling Rivalry Fostering Growth

Brenden acknowledges the invaluable role his brother has played in his development as a player: “When you’re in a shooting drill, sometimes you can take time off. But you know he’s going to want to beat me, and I’m going to want to beat him, so you go that extra mile to keep getting better.” This sibling rivalry not only fostered their individual talents but also strengthened their bond as teammates.

Career Highlights to Date

Brenden made a splash in the MLS, scoring his debut goal with Philadelphia in March 2019, later earning a spot on teams like Salzburg and Leeds. He has also made significant contributions to the national team, showcasing his skills in the World Cup. Paxten’s journey is dynamically unfolding; debuting in MLS in May 2021, he has already marked his presence by scoring for the U.S. in international play.

Sharing the Field Once Again

Interestingly, despite their roles on Euro clubs, it had been years since they played together on the same team, rekindling their on-field chemistry during recent national team camps. A brief competitive clash occurred last November in Germany, signaling a growing sense of unity and nostalgia for their shared youth.

Looking Ahead

As they prepare for the Gold Cup, where the U.S. aims for victory against Guatemala, the brothers will continue to work towards individual goals. Following the tournament, Brenden will return to Leeds while Paxten is set to join Eintracht Frankfurt, unless a loan arrangement is made.

A Legacy in the Making

The story of Brenden and Paxten Aaronson captures the essence of familial support, competitive spirit, and the relentless pursuit of dreams. Whether in the basement or on a world stage, their journey is emblematic of dedication, talent, and the power of family in the world of sports.
