U.S. News & World Report has released its 2025-26 list of Best Global Universities, and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) has successfully secured a spot within the top 20% of universities worldwide. This prestigious ranking places VCU at No. 411 among an impressive pool of 2,250 universities from 105 countries. The universities are evaluated based on a range of indicators that assess academic performance and research reputation.

A Testament to Excellence

Beverly Warren, Ed.D., Ph.D., who serves as the interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, expressed excitement about this recognition. “VCU’s placement among the top 20% of universities worldwide affirms our growing reputation as a leader in impactful research, cutting-edge education, and global engagement,” she stated. Warren emphasized that this achievement is a direct result of the exceptional dedication and innovative work of VCU faculty. The university’s curriculum now integrates AI technologies, and innovative research initiatives, such as the Convergence Labs, are paving the way for VCU’s emergence as a premier public urban research university on the global stage.

Programs of Distinction

Within this global recognition, VCU celebrated the standout performance of 17 of its academic programs. Among these, the Gastroenterology and Hepatology division earned an impressive global ranking of No. 9. Additionally, the Surgery program proudly tied for No. 74. Art Saavedra, M.D., Ph.D., who holds the title of dean at the School of Medicine and serves as the executive vice president for medical affairs at VCU Health, highlighted the significance of these rankings. He noted that the Gastroenterology and Hepatology division is not just recognized for its ranking; it represents a cornerstone of transformative research and innovation in the field of liver disease.

Commitment to Innovation

The drive for excellence continues within VCU’s Gastroenterology and Hepatology division under the leadership of Arun Sanyal, M.D. He is the chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, as well as a professor at the School of Medicine. Sanyal expressed pride in the division’s rising ranking, emphasizing that this accomplishment showcases the profound academic research performance and the wide-ranging expertise of the dedicated faculty and staff. His vision is clear; he aims not only to maintain this recognition but also to advance the program to the Top 5 globally.
